In parts of Ontario, our beautiful Ash trees are being ravaged by Emerald Ash Bore, the larva of an invasive beetle that feeds between the bark and the sapwood of the tree in an S shaped pattern. An infestation ultimately kills the tree. Dead trees in a forest are often referred to as "Widow Makers" and care should be taken when walking in the woods around obvious dead or struggling trees, especially during periods of wind and or snow loads.
White Pine Stands can be subject to Blister Rust, a fungal infection passed from currant and gooseberry (ribes) to Pine tree, to currant and gooseberry to Pine tree and so on. Once a White pine is infected at the trunk, there is no saving the tree and it will eventually die and need to be removed.
Identifying and selectively harvesting invasive species, and dead or dying trees can help reduce the spread of disease and create a safer environment for you, your family and friends on your property.
